Mattress Construction

In the mattress market today, it can sometimes be hard to even figure out where to start.  You know you want a good night’s sleep, and you probably have a good idea of what kind of a sleeper you are….whether you sleep hot, whether you tend to shift positions a lot before getting to sleep, whether you have back pain, what king of a budget you have, etc.  The problem is finding something that actually meets your needs.  Basically, mattresses are composed of two main parts:  a coil core and the comfort layers on top.  All of Wolf’s mattresses contain some type of innerspring for its coil core.  An innerspring mattress is the tried and true mattress model, and with such an enormous variety of styles and coil systems to choose from, you have great odds of finding something that will work for you.  Wolf’s fiber division manufactures many of the comfort layers found within our mattresses.  CertiPUR foams, Visco, or memory foam and Latex foam are also components used for our comfort layers.  The following information may assist you in finding the mattress that is right for you!

Coil Core

Bonnell Innerspring

Also called “open” coils, these are the oldest and most basic type of mattress springs. Bonnell coils are knotted, round-top, shaped like an hourglass and often wired together to form a continuous unit.  These coils form the simplest innerspring unit. The Bonnell coil is durable, reliable, supportive, and provides very good resilience, but not very good at controlling motion transfer.  Due to their large hollow spaces, Bonnell innersprings have a particularly high air permeability providing optimal climatic conditions within the mattress.  Wolf’s Gray Wolf Collection of mattresses all contain the Bonnell innerspring unit with comfort layers of Wolf’s own fiber products and/or CertiPUR foam.  They are considered great “starter” mattresses offering trusted support at a good price. Pocket Coils or Wrapped Coils

Pocket springs are individually wrapped coil systems that are entirely independent allowing for added contour and pressure point relief.  Pocket coils are more responsive and control motion transfer, while still providing support.  Pocket springs do not envelope or “hug” the sleeper which results in more airflow and helps to keep heat retention minimized.  Limited conforming ability tends to allow for easier body movement, namely changing positions.  This directly translates to more comfort.

The pocket coil that Wolf uses in their Silver Wolf mattress collection is an 8”, 850 wrapped coil unit with fortified edge support that allows for larger sleeping space and at the same time providing edge support.  The Silver Wolf collection uses a combination of different levels of CertiPUR foam and Wolf’s own fiber products to provide the comfort layers.   View our pocket coil products here.

The pocket coil that Wolf uses in their Black Wolf mattress collection is an 8”, 850 Posturized wrapped coil unit that is twice tempered and double coil encasement to provide additional support and decrease motion transfer.  The Black Wolf collection uses a combination of Visco, or memory foam, Latex foam, CertiPUR Foams and Wolf’s own fiber products for its comfort layers.  View our posutized wrapped coil mattresses here.

Fiber Products

Cotton is commonly found in the top of a mattress as a cover to provide cushion and comfort.  Cotton is also comfortable, a good absorbent and hypoallergenic.  Wolf’s fiber division produces Cottonique which combines selected grades of cotton with polyester fibers for a unique, durable upholstery blend that outperforms and outlasts traditional cotton batting.  As a result, Wolf mattresses are more resilient, more comfortable and yet surprisingly light.

Wolf’s fiber division produces a thermally bonded cotton/polyester pad, the Polypad, which serves as an eco friendly foam replacement pad.

Belly Band

This pad is a highly densified thermally bonded polyester/cotton fiber pad made by Wolf utilizing melted polypropelene binder fibers.  This dense pad adds firmness to any core, spring or foam to provide added center posturizing to any sleep surface where it is utilized.

Blue Pad

This pad is a highly densified polyester/cotton fiber pad made by Wolf under high heat utilizing melted polypropelene binder fibers.  This dense full surface pad adds firmness to any core, spring or foam to provide added support to any total sleep surface.

Foam Products

There are three main types of foams being used in the mattress industry today: Latex, Polyurethane, and Visco-Elastic (memory foam).

Each foam is made from different materials and provides a different sleeping experience.

CertiPUR Foam

All Polyurethane foams that Wolf uses in their mattresses are CertiPUR.

CertiPUR-US® is a certification program administered by a
not-for-profit organization.

CertiPUR-US certified foams are:

✓ Made without ozone depleters

✓ Made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (”Tris”) flame retardants

✓ Made without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals

✓ Made without formaldehyde

✓ Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission

✓ Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)

It’s one of the more economical choices, but this mattress doesn’t provide as much support as latex or memory foam mattresses. View all of our mattresses that use CertiPUR-US foam here.

Visco = Memory Foam

This mattress uses the same chemicals as a polyurethane foam, but it also has added chemicals to create that signature foam imprint seen on mattress ads and mattress commercials.  Since it is much denser than its counterparts, it absorbs more pressure and offers more support. Due to the materials and chemicals used to make this foam, the mattress tends to sleep hot and it won’t sleep nearly as “cool” as latex.  The Visco foam that Wolf uses is all CertiPUR.  The Wolf Black Wolf Collection mattresses that have a quilted top will eliminate the sleeping “hot” sensation.

Latex Foam

Mattresses made with this foam are known for being natural and durable. They are one of the most eco-friendly mattresses on the market and they provide excellent support and will outlast polyurethane and memory foam mattresses.  Mattresses with Latex foam provide more of a bounce than those made with Visco foam.

A Hybrid Mattress is a combination of an excellent innerspring unit and Visco, or memory foam, or Latex Foam to deliver the benefits of both technologies.  Hybrids allow the sleeper to enjoy the perfect blend of sturdy support and contouring comfort.  Every Wolf Hybrid contains an 8”, 850 individually wrapped coil unit with fortified edge support and posturized coils in the “critical middle”.  This coil system will give more contouring support and decreases motion transfer.  Wolf’s Hybrids contain either Visco, or memory foam or Latex Foam.  Visco foam provides slow response and low resistance creating contouring comfort.  Latex foam has more elasticity than visco foam and so is more responsive and has a natural bounce.  Wolf’s Black Wolf lineup provides a variety of high-quality Hybrid mattresses to choose from at some of the lowest prices available.  View our Hybrid Mattresses!

Double Sided

Wolf Corporation believes that double sided mattresses just make sense.  They will last longer and extend the life of the mattress as long as they are maintained properly, i.e. rotated and flipped over periodically.  Double sided mattresses are built from the core out so that both sides offer the same luxury mattress support.  When you flip your mattress you will have a fresh, flat surface to lie down on, at the same time giving the other side a change to recover and maintain its quality.  Wolf offers a variety of double sided mattresses at extremely reasonable prices.
